Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor Masterbatch protects metal parts from rust inside sealed plastic packaging. The film slowly releases a corrosion-inhibiting vapour that settles on the metal and forms an invisible protective layer. Used for steel coil, automotive, aerospace, electronic and defence packaging where parts must arrive corrosion-free.

A Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor masterbatch for LDPE and LLDPE film. The active is the corrosion-inhibiting additive dispersed on a polyolefin carrier. Added to blown or cast film it releases protective vapours into the sealed atmosphere of the package. The vapours adsorb onto exposed metal surfaces and form a passive monolayer that blocks the electrochemical corrosion reaction. Used to protect ferrous parts in transit and storage, with multi-metal grades for aluminium, copper, zinc and brass.

What’s the recommended loading in LDPE or LLDPE film?

Loading is set by the severity of the corrosion environment. Lower loading suits light applications: small parts, short transit, controlled indoor storage. Higher loading is required for demanding corrosion environments: large steel surfaces, marine atmosphere or long-term warehouse storage. Bag film and bubble wrap use equivalent loading. We confirm the dose against your parts (steel grade, surface finish, surface area to package volume ratio) and the expected storage duration.

How does VCI protect metal inside packaging?

The corrosion-inhibiting additive has a low but finite vapour pressure at ambient temperature. After the film is blown it slowly volatilises out of the polymer into the enclosed atmosphere. The molecules adsorb onto exposed metal and form a passive monolayer that displaces water and oxygen, blocking the electrochemical reaction that drives corrosion. The film acts as a slow-release reservoir for the inhibitor.

Which metals does it protect, and is there a multi-metal grade?

The standard grade is optimised for ferrous metals (carbon steel, cast iron, low-alloy steel) with full protection up to 24 months. For aluminium, copper, zinc, brass and galvanised steel we supply a multi-metal grade with a balanced inhibitor blend that does not blacken non-ferrous surfaces. Specify the metal mix at enquiry; a single film should not be expected to protect ferrous and copper alloys with the same chemistry, since some inhibitors that protect steel will attack copper.

How long does the protection last, and what affects it?

A correctly sealed VCI package gives up to 24 months of protection at standard loading. Service life depends on three factors: package integrity (every open and re-close vents inhibitor), temperature (higher temperature drives faster inhibitor loss) and the surface-to-volume ratio of metal to free air. Punctured or partly open bags lose protection within weeks. For dispatch lots opened in transit, expect several months of protection, with duration depending on film gauge, seal integrity and storage conditions.

Is Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor Masterbatch compliant for food and regulated industries?

The corrosion-inhibiting chemistry in our standard grade is listed under FDA 21 CFR for indirect food contact and the actives are REACH-registered in the EU. For defence and aerospace packaging the film can be tested against MIL-PRF-22019 and MIL-STD-3010 corrosion protocols on request. We supply a Declaration of Compliance, REACH statement and Certificate of Analysis with every dispatch. Nitrite-free grades are available for buyers who need to avoid inhibitor nitrites altogether.

Can I get a trial sample, and what’s the lead time?

Yes. We supply 1-2 kg trial samples with a Certificate of Analysis, Declaration of Compliance and a recommended loading map for the metals you want to protect.
